One of the first things people notice
about Betty is her calmness and optimism
that often have a restorative affect
on those around her.
Her paintings have a similar quality :
Light and breezy
with playful, harmonious colors.
She achieves both a sense of calm serenity
and visual excitement, all at once.
Betty is an avid environmentalist
and strong advocate for slowing climate change. Through her “Coastal Series”, she expresses how we all are ONE,
that all of nature is interconnected and interdependent.
From creatures under the sea,
on land and up beyond the stars,
nothing in our natural world
exists in isolation.
Even the moon tugs at our ocean waves.
Her enigmatic paintings “Starfish Sky”
and “Underwater Forest”
each portray a peaceful ocean floor,
an underwater crescent moon
with a starfish lying amongst the stars.
In her soft seascapes, there is a reverence
for the beauty of seagulls
hanging in the wind currents.
She especially loves the restorative feeling
of being near the waves and
the relaxing pastel tones of sand and foam.
****
EARLY YEARS
As a child, Betty greatly admired her uncle,
an artist and successful interior designer
in Washington DC.
On one of his visits to Florida,
he encouraged Betty to toss out her
coloring books.
He replaced them with fresh, clean white
paper, watercolors and brushes.
What a freeing experience!
No longer having to color inside the lines,
she began looking at the world
around her, drawing freely and discovering
her own expressive creativity.
Betty graduated from East Carolina University
with a degree in Art Education,
and began her career as an art teacher
in Florida and rural Virginia.
After teaching, she ventured into graphic design and illustration at one of Miami’s premiere
ad agencies during the glamorous
Mad Men era of the early 70s.
After building a strong portfolio while at
Hume Smith & Mickleberry,
she later opened Armstrong Design,
her own graphic design studio in Miami
which she continued in LA and SF.
However, with creative projects shifting
towards all digital illustration,
she began to miss the tactile feel of paints
and brushes of the fine art world.
Taking a huge leap of faith,
she returned to Florida
and opened Armstrong Gallery
on Worth Avenue in Palm Beach.
As an avid environmentalist,
she focused on wildlife art featuring
“all things beautiful and endangered”
With her background in advertising and marketing, she was able to quickly
meet and network with interior designers, architects and other gallery owners
in need of fine art.
I use many different mediums, combining acrylics and pastels along with
colored inks and dyes on both canvas and
heavy watercolor papers.
It's exciting to combine layers of colored tissue papers as a base, allowing their translucence
to create unexpected colors.
It's like a a dance ... where skillful control
is dancing with a partner who is
full of free expression and surprises.
Things that nourish my soul ...
Walking every evening just before the sun
goes down, listening to the birds
settle down for the night.
Listening to my favorite jazz duo
Davis & Dow live ~ with an ice cold martini.
Visiting Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance
in August to see the most
beautiful classic cars in the world.
Watching the moon rise over the ocean
down by the Lake Worth pier.
Visiting galleries to admire the works
of other artists.
